Living in San Diego definitely has it perks. One of them comes once a year in the form of Comic Con. I don't have much to add to what you can see in the photos, except that it was crazy and fun, I got lots of free stuff, and I've already pre-registered for 2009.
I liked the second White Queen costume better than the first one.
And holy freakin' crap Jonathan Frakes is old. Him and Robert Picardo both have a look in their eyes like "is this is what I've been reduced to." And who's the ruggedly handsome fellow in the picture above them (I mean other than you).
I was still on vacation while it was going on, so I didn't get to follow the news as closely as I normally do, but what I did see made me think it's less and less about comics though. Seems there were things for movies, TV shows, and kinds of other media in addition to comics.
"And who's the ruggedly handsome fellow in the picture above them..."
why that would be Jamie Bamber, aka Captain Apollo.
Also in the Frakes/Picardo photo is Avery Brooks. He looked a bit older also. I didn't make it back in time to see Marina Sirtis the next day.
I've heard and read a lot that it's not what it used to be, but what it is now is pretty fun (I do feel bad for the original traders that keep getting pushed over and out). One Reuters story today quoted a guy who said "We built this house and suddenly we're finding our furniture on the lawn. We let these rich relatives in and suddenly we're not good enough to live here anymore"
It does seem to be more of a Geek Con than a Comic Con. And a Hyper-Marketed, Mega $$$ Geek Con at that.
